Mnemonic of
Central Pain
A Key to Remembering Central Pain Components

Medical literature adopts a functional definition of terms when discussing Central Pain, just as a neurologist might do in reporting symptoms of "spinothalamic dysfunction" as they are classically, but not necessarily anatomically, defined. (Anthoney 1993) The terms used to describe Central Pain are as varied as the individuals who contract the disease. The purpose of this study was not to investigate the validity of terms, but to suggest the unifying concepts behind the terms used. As data in the categories is accumulated, it should be possible to determine which symptoms are central to the pain state and which stem from injury to neighboring structures.

"M.D. has C.P."

A mnemonic of Central Pain is helpful to remember the various areas to which inquiry must be directed, "M.D. h.a.s. C.P."

This suggests to the mind the different pain components. The referenced terms are Muscle, Dysesthesias, Hyperpathia, Allodynia, Shooting (lancinating), Circulatory (pins and needles), and Peristaltic.
