Online Articles About
Pain Research

Most medical and professional journal articles are not freely available online. This list of resources is intended to provide quick access to the information that is available online. For the purposes of compiling this list, a higher priority was placed on the source of the information, the author or the researcher who was the original source for the article, than where the information is published online. Please consider these online articles as a strictly secondary source of information.

These articles are listed in no particular order, other than researchers or subjects may be grouped as I was researching information to include on this page. As time allows I may include a brief synopsis of each article.

I will add to this page whenever anything of interest comes to my attention. Please feel free to suggest additional online articles.

Newest links are at the top of the list.

What is Pain?
By Clifford J. Woolf
Woolf is one of the top pain biochemists in the world. In this article he discusses and illustrates peripheral and central sensitization and, on the last page of the article, neuropathic pain. There is an interesting image to illustrate how when a nerve is injured all touch sensation is translated into pain. There is also a mention of how it is possible for a variety of nerve fibers to convey pain messages.

Findings Suggest New Approaches To Easing Chronic Pain
By Cassie Ferguson

This article discusses Dr. Clifford Woolf's ongoing quest for a solution to intractable pain.  Dr. Clifford Woolf has discovered a new sodium channel that is specific to certain pain-signaling sensory neurons. This discovery could eventually lead to a treatment that would block only pain messages and not alter other normal sensations or functions.

Presentation at Society for Neuroscience 2000 Conference
By Dr. Clifford Woolf

The Neurobiology of Pain
By Ronald Dubner and Micheal Gold
Presented at the National Academy of Sciences colloquium "The Neurobiology of Pain," December 11-13, 1998. This paper serves as an introduction to additional papers presented at the conference.

The Anatomic Background of Low–Back Pain
By S. Robert, et al
While not specific to Central Pain, this article does have a good discussion of Patrick Wall and Ron Melzack's gate control theory of pain, and of how emotion and pain are connected within the brain.
